Shoe manufacturers are starting to make more and more boots with wide shafts to fit athletic and plus size consumers. Wide calf boots for women can now be found in a collection of styles and shapes, and an athletic or plus size woman can find a boot that fits and will match any outfit she might want to wear.
Traditionally, shoe makers produced boots in a collection of foot sizes and widths, but didn't take into inventory the width of the boots shaft. This alienated women who had larger than appropriate calves.

You will be hard pressed to find the boot with the "perfect fit". Boots are designed with extra material at the ankle so there is play or give when the wearer walks. If you notice wrinkles or gaps at the ankle of your boot this is normal.
If your measurement falls somewhere in in the middle of a normal measurement, for example, you are 17.5" instead of 17", you can purchase a boot at the lower size and have them stretched to fit.
Alternatively you can also purchase the next size higher and have the shaft reduced to fit. These techniques will allow you to accomplish a best fit in your boot and it's not that high-priced either.
